US firm claims first 3D-printed metal gun
A
Californian engineering company says it has produced the first metal
gun made on a 3D printer, releasing a video showing the firearm scoring
repeated bullseyes in successful tests.
But Solid Concepts, which describes itself as a world leader of 3D
printing services, said making the classic 1911 shotgun did not come
cheap, requiring a lot more than a souped-up desktop printer.
“It functions beautifully,” it said of the gun, in a blog accompanying the video clips. “Our resident gun expert has fired 50 successful rounds and hit a few bull’s eyes at over 30 yards (meters).
The gun comprises more than 30 3D-printed components, including stainless steel and other metal parts.
“The whole concept of using a laser sintering process to 3D print a metal gun revolves around proving the reliability, accuracy and usability of 3D metal printing,” said Solid Concepts’ vice president Kent Firestone.
“We’re working to change people’s perspective,” he added from the company’s base in Valencia, 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles.
The 3D printer they use does not come cheap.
“This isn’t about desktop printers… the industrial printer we used costs more than my college tuition — and I went to a private university,” said Firestone.
“And the engineers who run our machines are top of the line; they are experts who know what they’re doing and understand 3D printing better than anyone in this business.”
The use of 3D printing technology to manufacture weapons is not new. But making them out of metal is.
Earlier this year computer files allowing someone to make a single-shot Liberator gun were downloaded more than 100,000 times from Defense Distributed, an open-source website dedicated to 3D printable gun components.
The State Department, which oversees US weapons exports, ordered the blueprints to be taken off the Internet in May — but by that point, users had already reposted them widely on various file-sharing sites.
But Solid Concepts said its system is legal, claiming that they are the only 3D printing service provider with a Federal Firearms License.
“Now, if a qualifying customer needs a unique gun part in five days, we can deliver,” the company said.
“We have the right materials, and the right engineers who know how to best program and maintain these machines, to make 3D printing accurate, powerful and here to stay.”

Kajol not interested in Aparna Sen
Kajol
might not be doing a lot of films these days, but she is still riding
high on cloud eleven. Aparna Sen approached Kajol to cast her in a film,
which is inspired by Sen’s own life. The film is titled Iti Mrinalini.
According to an industry insider, Aparna Sen managed to reach Kajol after chasing her for months. But, Kajol apparently showed no interest in the script.
A source informs, “After chasing the young actress for some months to hear a narration, she got a date from her but fifteen minutes into the narration, Kajol excused herself and walked out.
After waiting for half-an-hour, Aparna realised that she was not coming back and left the Devgan residence, smarting with humiliation. Now she has cast her daughter Konkona in the role. A few years ago, Aparna was to direct Kajol’s husband Ajay Devgan in PNC’s Gulel but that project fell through even though Ajay had liked the script”.
Aparna Sen, though, denies the rumour, “Absolute rubbish! I never even thought of Kajol for Iti Mrinalini which is a small budget Bengali film where Konkona and I were always supposed to be playing the younger and older age of the same person. Kajol was never even considered! I have never met her.”

Legendary Bollywood singer Manna Dey dies
Legendary
Bollywood singer Manna Dey died in hospital on Thursday after a
five-decade career on the soundtracks of Indian movie classics, reports
said. He was 94.
The star, who had been unwell with respiratory problems in recent months, died of cardiac arrest in the early morning, a senior doctor at the Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital in southern Bangalore city told the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.
“We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully. His last rites will be performed later in the day,” his son-in-law Jnanranjan Deb told PTI.
Born in Kolkata in May 1919 as Prabodh Chandra Dey, he was given the nickname Manna by his uncle K.C. Dey, a well-known singer and actor who was a great influence on his nephew.
After he graduated from college, Manna travelled to Mumbai where he was first employed as an assistant, before making his debut as a playback singer in the 1943 film ‘Tamanna‘ (Desire).
His first big hit came seven years later in ‘Mashaal‘ (Torch) and his career went on to span more than five decades, during which he recorded over 3,000 songs.
His last recording, for “Umar” (Age), was in 2006.
The versatile singer was as much at ease with a classical Indian song as he was with a peppy youthful one. Beside Hindi, he also sang in regional languages such as Bengali, Malayalam, Bhojpuri and Gujarati.
He won various awards for his work in the music industry, including the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award from the Indian government.
His sang various numbers in films for Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who was one of many in the industry to pay tribute to Dey on Twitter.
“Manna Dey, stalwart of the music world, passes away. Flooded with memories and his songs,” Bachchan wrote.
“Manna Dey had a unique voice. He will live on through his songs,” wrote actor Shabana Azmi.

Ranjish Hi Sahi Episode 3 – Going Strong
Itna buland na jao ke upur se tumhei zindagi ki khushkiyan, us ki musartein haqeer nazar ayen…pachtao gi aik din
This latest installment of Ranjish Hi Sahi fit the bill in every possible way; it was engaging, fast paced, excellently directed and acted out and the dialogues have been written beautifully. Generally people complaint that most dramas with depth lack the entertainment factor needed to make a play more engrossing. For people who think so, Ranjish Hi Sahi is a must watch. It is not depressing or dark either, so that is another plus.
Kamal Hassan like a desperate man would not let Yumna slip away from his life once again. He is like a man who has found something very precious which he had lost years back , his desperation was completely relatable. Yumna’s situation is such that she cannot even think about doing anything that will change the way things are with her and her daughters. She has given her daughters enough love to fill all voids in their lives and has been a strong pillar of support for them. That is the reason why Tooba and Hiba do not feel the need for a father figure in their lives. Kamal confided in Tooba and as a result Tooba even with all her insecurities was willing to support her mother’s decision. It is plain to see that Hiba will not be understanding at all because she cannot share her mother’s love and affection with anyone else except her sister. Maya Ali maybe playing a role similar to the one she has played in many other dramas but I like her in it nevertheless, perhaps because I haven’t followed any of her dramas very religiously. Hiba has met her match and for once the side track romance actually seems appealing. Mohammad Ali (Arsal) has been doing well till now, there are times when his body language is too stiff and his dialogue delivery too flat but he is definitely much better than many other newcomers.
I found the grey shade in Yumna’s hair much more real than what we usually get to see on screen; a thick layer of grey on a few strands as opposed to a the grey shade spread over the entire hair. The scene in the garden was beautifully shot; the vibrant colors along with the combination of green and white were very striking. The only thing that did not quite fit in were Faisal Rehman’s mismatched clothes.
The relationship between Yumna and her daughters has been portrayed very well; the credit for that goes to the writer, director and the actors. I really like the quality of Urdu that we are getting to hear in the play. Faisal Rehman and Samiya Mumtaz’s excellent dialogue delivery just adds to the beauty of the well written dialogues. Sana Javed was a very good choice for playing the role of Tooba, she is very delicate and pleasant looking even though her acting can be a little unconvincing at time but that can be easily overlooked.
Till now this drama does not appear to be anything like the usual A & B productions play. There is no excessive rona dhona or over exaggeration of the becharapan of the main protagonist. No doubt, I feel for Yumna because she must be very tired and in need of a break and some kind of an emotional support, love. But she is not your usual heroine who is lost without her man and cannot look out for herself. The way Hiba holds Yumna accountable went to show that even after raising two children all on her own Yumna does not have the right to take her own decisions. Something which is very true, every mother puts her children’s happiness before her own needs. Even though Yumna keeps on telling Hiba that she expects too much from her but Hiba still feels (like any pampered child) that the only way of showing her affection to her mother is to keep things the way they always have been. The show very aptly shows how difficult it is for a woman to find some happiness for her own self when she has grown up children.
The picture quality of the play has been superb throughout. Overall, the play is a good mix of emotions which are not overly intense but touching nevertheless. I am definitely looking forward to more.
